Could the on-campus whorehouse/abortion clinic/handbag-boutique be next?

Comes today the news that our university on the hill has come up with the PERFECT solution to the campus intoxication problem. This in reaction to three on-campus deaths last year by students who over-served themselves.

A "task force created in the aftermath of three students death related to drugs or alcohol has recommended opening a campus bar and allowing parties at campus fraternity houses."

Professional bartenders will be part of the party, too, according to the task force!

Story yet to come: The boozeries of Lower Greenville Avenue consider how to make up lost revenue when students can get shitfaced without leaving "the bubble."

Hey Prof, welcome back to blog-land!

I just wanted to throw my two cents in about this. I think this is the most mature thing SMU has decided to do in regards to the three deaths last nyear (which if I'm correct didn't all have to do because of alcohol?). Instead of isolating their students in defensive way, they are accepting the fact that indeed the students do party and why not create a safe and more regulated way to do it? Better than the previous solutions they've had, that's for sure. If I'm not mistaken they are only going to serve beer and not hard liquor, can't be THAT bad. However I just don't see SMU kids as mature as Rice, it should be an interesting scene.

Lafayette College in Pennsylvania recently decided to open an on-campus pub too.

I fail to see how these admins think this will stop underage drinking tho. Especially when most undergrads I knew always got stupid drunk BEFORE they went to parties.

I do not think that is their goal.

I think their goal is to help the students drink in a safer environment.

I don't think those ideas are half bad. The goal isn't to stop underage drinking -- that will never happen on any campus. What SMU can do is make drinking safer both for students of age and underage students who do make the choice to drink. As of right now, fraternities cannot hold parties in their houses and are required to have them off-campus. Even when there are busses provided, there are still the idiots who are going to drive to the bar... and then drive home. By having them on-campus, the freshman students (it is mostly first-years) going to the parties will only have to WALK home. Besides with SMU PD and professional bartenders there, it should be fine.

The on-campus pub was suggested to only sell wine and beer, not liquor. Obviously wine and beer can still make people drunk, but maybe it will prevent people from going off-campus to get wasted if they know they can walk to campus and do it. It may even promote relations between students and professors, as I'm sure both would frequent it. I think it would be cool to see my professors outside of a classroom setting, but it would be weird to meet them off-campus somewhere.

What about offering 3.2 beer? That's what we had at the University of Colorado in Boulder. We all gathered in the neighborhood bar called The Sink. It was hot, smoky and the walls were painted with graffiti.

They also had great burgers. The entire campus gathered there, or so it seemed. What a wonderful meeting place. And yes, my geology lab instructor spent most days there. I often met him at this bar, because I had a terrific crush on him. Finally, I broke down and asked him to the Tri-Delt formal. What fun relationship we had!

I work on campus at night and get to see a lot of underage drinking firsthand. A bar on campus will not solve anything. People old enough to drink will do it off campus. People not old enough to drink will still do it off campus or tucked away in their dorm/frat room. This latest suggestion from the task force is as big a joke as their other 8 suggestions.
