Ah, college life. From both sides of the books--the learning and the learned--I share the stories. Send yours to ThePhantomProf@aol.com or leave them as comments here. Now sit up straight and if a cellphone goes off in class, it's mine.

As the entire world goes down the crapper thanks in large part to GWB's actions since 2001, we now have the invisible PC police dictating what THEATER CRITICS can and cannot say about a goddamned PLAY?
Jesus. Some people take themselves WAY too seriously. Thus being left with insufficient energy to give a care about anything else outside their tight little self-important sphere.
And I hate it that you had to endure the east coast heat wave in such primitive conditions.
As a laid back Texas girl, my butt puckers at even the sound of the word, "Connecticut." Don't think I'd like it there much.
At least we have massive amounts of civilized A/C down here!
I'm a Texan (Houston) and I think Connecticut is OK. Certain aspects of it anyway. If I am ever traveling and someone is surprised that I have any level of sophistication due to my being from the south, I have to wonder about their intelligence and education status. I enjoy classical music, a good bottle of Opus One and also a big slab of mesquite smoked ribs, Dr Pepper and cold beer.
I believe that after 3 days of that shit, I would have had to say "see y'all" and hauled ass out of there.
You have put me there. Now I must get a cold wet cloth for my head and find some fresh food to eat and NOT think about the-ay-ter at all.
(BTW, as I click into and out of America's Got Talent I have independently come to the conclusion that Hasselhoff starts each show sober, but is drunk by the end. I didn't even know he had a problem.)
What was Simon's purpose, other than humiliating Zoe Caldwell and getting an easy laugh? Was her performance so awful that she truly deserved this remark? Did it tell the reader anything useful about the play?
I wonder if Elaine could dig up a link to the review in question. I'd like to see for myself whether I consider the remark to be useful, or just vicious.
"Be nice" isn't a PC command, it's used as a blatantly sexist insult most of the time. In that "niceness" is a desirable "feminine" trait. At least that's my experience. It's used by others who don't want to see females flaunting their cleverness or wit. Nice implies passivity and lack of opinion, it is purely submissive. CIVILITY is respectful but not submissive.
Oh, there's plenty of A/C up north in the summer. It's just not available in (most) educational facilities. I think someone way back when decided that because we're closer to the Arctic circle that schools won't need A/C. So not true. Many teachers at my high school dug into their own wallets to buy those dinky window A/C units. Most of our classes were on the third floor... ick. It's just schools, I assure you. Dorms rarely have A/C unless you're in the south.
Although, during the summer courses at my Northeastern college, students reside only in the A/C dorms.

I think I am going to threaten my students with being sent away to this theatre camp when they act up in my class this school year. Valhalla!

Please post installment 4. I am going into withdrawl.
Excellent point about niceness and gender, Ingrid.
